Bay Path Claws Wheelock in Battle of the “Wild” Cats

Choate and Belsen Honored During Senior Day

CHICOPEE, Mass.- The Wildcats of Bay Path notch their second New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) downing league rivals Wheelock 5-1 today during an early morning match hosted at Elms College while Bay Path honored their two departing seniors midfielder Ruth Choate (Lewiston, Maine) and forward Stephanie Belsen (Windsor Locks, Conn.). Bay Path advances to 2-0 in conference play at 2-8 overall, while Wheelock falls to 1-10 overall and 1-2 in the NECC.

Sophomore forward Kacy Hikel (Kenduskeag, Maine) started the scoring for Bay Path off a long drive up the middle by Choate and then tipped by Belsen to Hikel in the 14th minute of play. In under a minute later Hikel would send the ball inside for a second Bay Path goal by junior forward Shayna Fish (Jaffrey, N.H.). This would be the eventual game winner for the home Wildcats.

Unfortunately sophomore keeper Anna Meyer (Millbrook, N.Y.) fell on top of the ball after an attempt by Blue and Gold Wildcats, sophomore midfielder Jen Ryan (Bellingham, Mass.) scored on a penalty stroke to break-up the shut-out.

The seniors would start the rally going in the second half for Bay Path with Belsen scoring their third goal of an assist by Choate at 40:47 on the clock. The Maroon Wildcats would continue the scoring in the second half shutting down Wheelock.
Fish would connect with key reservist sophomore forward Alison Schoen (Southampton, Mass.)  in the 45th minute. Hikel would conclude the scoring for the game netting the fifth goal for Bay Path at 66:24 on the clock. Schoen was awarded the assist.

Bay Path Head Coach Katie Jones was incredibly trilled with the result of the game as a fitting way to honor the two seniors who contributed greatly to today's victory. "We knew we had to put in a hard week of practice to prepare for today. It was great to see how all the hard work and effort during the week lead to such a well played match," stated Jones.

Meyer would record the victory with three saves. Wheelock's senior goalie Michelle Greene (Mansfield, Mass.) suffered the loss facing 16 shots allowing five goals with nine saves.

Bay Path will be back in action facing NECC foe Elms on Wednesday, October 16th at an 8:00 p.m. start under the lights.
