HOLYOKE, Mass., Jan. 22, 2011 – The Newbury College women’s basketball team broke a two game skid with a 63-46 victory over Bay Path College, Saturday afternoon. Junior guard Morganna Machado (Attleboro, MA) led the way, netting a team-high 14 points en route to the season sweep of the Wildcats.
Newbury jumped out to a 14-1 lead in the game’s opening 4:04 before the Wildcats responded with a 13-2 run over the next seven minutes as they took a nine-point. In the first half, the Nighthawks limited the host Wildcats to just 23.7% from the floor as they took a nine-point, 30-21 advantage into the locker room.
Sophomore center Catherine O’Connell (Quincy, MA) followed up Machado, registering a double-double tallying 13 points and 12 rebounds. Newbury held advantages in points in the paint (28-18), second chance points (18-13) and bench scoring (27-11), while also outrebounding Bay Path 56-47.
Wildcats freshman guard Justine Hook (Berwick, PA) led all scorers with a game-high 19 points in 36 minutes for the Wildcats in the loss.
Newbury improve to 5-3 in the NECC and 7-9 overall while Bay Path remains winless at 0-16 and 0-8 in the conference. The Nighthawks return to the court on Tuesday January 25th when they host the conference leading Daniel Webster College Eagles (13-2; 6-0 NECC) at 5:00pm.
