HOLYOKE, Mass. – Junior Kala McKenzie (Fair Haven Vt.) recorded 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while classmate Amber Flagg (Windsor, Conn.) added 18 points, seven boards and six assists to lead a trio of Mountaineer scorers in double figures as Southern Vermont College captured an 80-52 victory over host Bay Path University in New England Collegiate Conference women's basketball action Thursday night at the Bartley Center.
The host Wildcats were led by the duo of sophomore Briana Kujawski (Webster, Mass.) and junior Dallas Jackson (Springfield, Mass.), who combined for 34 points. Kujawski netted a team-high 19 points, including 18 in the second half, while Jackson posted a double-double with 15 points and game-highs with 10 rebounds and six steals.
Southern Vermont raced out to a 34-16 halftime lead thanks to 44% shooting (14-for-32) in the opening stanza, while limiting the Wildcats to just 18% from the field (6-for-33).
The Bay Path attack ignited in the second half, as the Wildcats filled up the stat sheet with 36 points, including a perfect 10-for-10 showing from the free throw line. The visiting Mountaineers, however, shot a red-hot 56% (18-for-32) after the break to pump in 46 second-half points.
Despite the Bay Path defense forcing 22 turnovers in the game, SVC rode a 55-30 edge in rebounding en route to the victory. The Wildcats committed just 13 turnovers in 40 minutes of play.
Freshman Chloe Longe (Enosburg, Vt.) chipped in 13 points and six rebounds for SVC, while sophomore Brenna Roy (Stratford Springs, Conn.) and junior Frankie Wauneka (Easthampton, Mass.) each added five for Bay Path.
Southern Vermont snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 10-7 overall and 8-2 in NECC play with the victory, while Bay Path slipped to 2-10 overall and 2-6 in the NECC. Next up for the Mountaineers is a trip to Lesley Saturday at 8:00 p.m.
The Wildcats, which saw a two-game winning streak snapped, will host Wheelock Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
