BOSTON, Mass. – Senior goalkeeper Sarah McCaffrey (East Taunton, Mass.) stopped all 15 shots she faced and sophomore midfielder Emma Petner (Hilo, Hawaii) netted the only goal of the match to give the Wheelock College women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over visiting Bay Path College this evening in a New England Collegiate Conference match at Winsor Field in Boston, MA.
Wheelock defeats Bay Path for the first time in school history in 10 meetings to improve to 4-11-0 overall on the season and 2-4-0 in league play, while Bay Path falls to 2-10-2 and 1-5-0. Wheelock's win total is its highest since a 5-13-0 record in 2007.
Petner scored the only marker of the night when freshman defender Madeline Domingo (Newington, Conn.) served the ball from midfield to the right side of the box, where classmate Katlyn Rose D'Errico (Nashua, N.H.) received it and sent a cross through the box to Petner, who buried a shot into the left corner for her team-leading fifth goal of the season at 25:25 of the first half for Wheelock.
The assist for Domingo was her fourth of the campaign to establish a new school record for helpers in a season, surpassing Lindsey Lacourse's mark set in 2006 and 2008 and Betsy Williams in 2003.
Bay Path controlled the ball for most of the match, but the Wheelock defense held strong, despite an 8-1 Bay Path margin on corner kicks.
Sophomore goalie Marina Rhodes (Providence, RI) made six saves for Bay Path.
Wheelock will be in action again on Saturday, October 20 when it travels to take on NECC foe Newbury College at Hedley Field on the campus of Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, MA at 1:00 p.m., while Bay Path hosts league opponent Daniel Webster College on the same day at 2:00 p.m.
