Bay Path Prevails in Season Opener Tri-Match Defeating Mass Maritime and Johnson State
EAST LONGMEADOW, MASS.- The Wildcats were led by senior middle blocker Lauren Vallee (Bristol, Conn.) hitting a stellar .513 for the day with 24 kills, nine aces and seven digs. Bay Path (2-0) hosted NCAA DIII regional opponents Mass Maritime Buccaneers (1-1) and John State Badgers (0-2) today in the opening women's volleyball weekend. In the first game the Wildcats took the Buccaneers in three straight sets 25-12, 25-12 and 25-16. In the second match, the Buccaneers came back to defeat the Badgers 25-5, 25-14 and 25-19. Bay Path swept the final match against Johnson State 25-5, 25-14 and 25-19.
In the first match, Vallee led the way with 14 kills, six digs and 2 service aces. Junior setter Lexi Cears (Agawam, Mass.) had 17 aces and two digs. Coming off the bench, sophomore defensive specialist Talia Hicks (Northfield, Mass.) led the way at the serve with five aces for the match. Sophomore middle hitter Jennifer Roy (Attleboro, Mass.) led her team with six kills.
In the second match, the Buccaneers' freshman outside hitter Marie Harrison (Weymouth, Mass.) led her team with a .375 attack percentage setting the pace for Mass. Maritime to take Johnson State in three straight sets. Roy also added five aces, while hitting in to a .375 attack percentage. Freshman setter Michelle Sheehan (Attleboro, Mass.) finished with 17 assists. The Badgers were led by sophomore outside hitter Kimberly Reville (Burke, N.Y.) with a .500 attack percentage and five kills also adding six service aces.
In the final match of the day, Reville once again had five kills and five aces, but unfortunately was not enough to overcome the Wildcats. Junior middle hitter Kaitlin Boucher (Barre, Vt.) also finished with five kills for the Badgers. The Wildcats' Vallee had ten kills and seven aces, while Cears topped all players with eight aces for the match. Junior middle hitter Taylor Heinbokel (Agawam, Mass.) added five kills, while newcomer freshman outside hitter Latonia Hornsby (Springfield, Mass.) finished with four aces.
The Wildcats will be back in action hosting St. Joseph on Thursday, September 7th at 7:00 p.m.
