Smith Swamps Bay Path
Springfield, MA - Smith College (4-5-2) blew by Bay Path (0-2) 10-1 in women's club ice hockey action Sunday evening. Bay Path scored first with a shot from Jessica Priestly (Middleboro, MA). She was assisted by Jodi Roberts (Westfield, MA) and Brittany Schon (South Windsor, CT). Smith responded two minutes later with a pass from Rachel Prehodka-Spindel (Clifton, NJ) to Katie Fear (Arvada, CO), resulting in a goal. Bay Path successfully killed off a minute and a half tripping penalty against Elizabeth Barclay (Auburn, ME).
Jessica Priestly got the second penalty for Bay Path for checking with 33 seconds left in the first period. Smith capitalized on the woman advantage and Spindel helped Smith close out the first period, scoring 5 seconds into the power play. She was assisted by Darcy Dwyer (Winchester, MA).
The second period was all Smith as they scored half of their total goals. Spindel had her second of the game, while Fear had her second and third goals. Monique Gagne (North Hampton, NH) and Mandy Cottle (Bennington, NH) each scored during the second period as well. Smith's Elisa DaCunha (West Hartford, CT) received a penalty with 3:44 left in the period, unfortunately Bay Path was unable to score on the woman advantage.
Anna Baeth (Frederick, MD) and Shelly Hagerman (Sarasota, FL) both contributed goals midway in the third period. Bay Path had two more chances to score when Jessica Kaplan (Burlington, VT) received a slashing penalty and again when Kristen Peterson Somersworth, NH) went to the box to serve a bench minor for Smith. However, it was Jessica Priestly's second penalty that ended the game for Bay Path. With one minute left, Priestly was sent to the box for tripping and with one second left, Smith's DaCunha scored.
Bay Path plays again on February 27th at 4:30pm when they take on the Westfield State University Women's Club Team at Amelia Park in Westfield.
