Bay Path "Wildcats" Defeat Wheelock "Wildcats" in NECC Softball Action
DOUGHERTY LEADS BAY PATH SOFTBALL TO DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OVER WHEELOCK, 20-0, 16-1
BOSTON, MA – Senior Keelin Dougherty (Northfield, NH) went 7-7 with two home runs, a double and eight runs batted in to lead the Bay Path College softball team to a sweep over host WheelockCollege this afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference action at PMC Softball field on the campus of Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, MA. Bay Path won the first game, 20-0 and took the nightcap, 16-1. Both games were halted after five innings, due to the eight-run mercy rule. Wheelockfalls to 0-10 overall and 0-6 in league play, while Bay Path improves to 3-11 and 2-4.
Bay Path scored 36 runs on 42 hits, including 12 extra-base knocks.
Dougherty was 3-3 with a homer, two walks, four runs scored and four RBI to lead Bay Path in the opening game. She also hurled a complete game victory, allowing just four hits and a pair of walks, while fanning two batters in five innings of work to improve to 2-8 on the season.
Junior second baseman Marina Rhodes (Providence, RI) singled home two runs, while freshman left fielder Gretchen Hale (Naugatuck, CT) doubled in a run and sophomore first baseman Katie Sirois (Windsor, CT) singled a run home to key a seven-run second for Bay Path to take an 8-0 advantage. Bay Path batted around for the second straight inning when it scored four runs in the third, fueled by a two-run single from Dougherty and RBI singles from Sirois and sophomore Casey Botelho (Providence, RI). Bay Path tacked on four runs in each of the final two innings as well. Run-scoring singles from Hale and freshman Krystal Fredette (Orange, MA) sparked the sixth for the visitors, while Dougherty cracked a solo homer to left center field and was later followed by a three-run shot to center field off the bat of sophomore Anna Meyer (Millbrook, NY) to give Bay Path its 20th run of the contest.
Freshman Maggie Doyle (Kingston, MA) led the Wheelock offense, going 2-2, while sophomore shortstop Katie Fleming (West Boylston, MA) and freshman center fielder Vanessa Valenti (Woodstock, CT) each collected singles for the home team. Freshman Erin Rice (Windsor, VT)suffered the loss to fall to 0-2 on the season after allowing 12 runs on 14 hits and five walks in three innings of work.
Bay Path scored 11 times in the first two innings to take control of game two. Meyer knocked in a pair of runs with a single and senior Mercedes Griffith (Malden, MA) plated a run with a single as part of a four-run first. Wheelock countered in the bottom of the frame when sophomore Vanessa Highbridge (Meriden, CT) drew a leadoff walk, followed by a single from Valenti. Both runners moved up a base on a passed ball, before Highbridge scored Wheelock's first run of the day on a fielder's choice by sophomore Kiersten Cosgrove (Pequannock, NJ). Bay Path scored seven runs in the second, thanks to a solo home run from Rhodes to lead off the frame, a two-run single from Griffith and run-scoring singles by freshman Jackie Lafleur (Gill, MA), Rhodes and Dougherty. Bay Path added a single run in the third for a 12-1 run lead and scored three more times in the fourth with two runs coming on a two-run homer from Dougherty. Bay Path capped the scoring in the fifth on an RBI double from Dougherty.
Sirois earned the victory to improve to 1-2 for Bay Path, allowing one run on three hits and a trio of walks, while striking out two. Senior Emily Serrano (North Adams, MA) also rapped out seven hits for Bay Path as one of seven players with three or more hits on the afternoon. Meyer finished with four hits and five RBI, while junior Katherine Chabot (Brookfield, MA) collected five hits, including three triples and a double to go with six runs scored.
Valenti finished with two hits to lead Wheelock and Doyle singled as well. Valenti (0-3) was saddled with the loss, allowing 16 runs (14 earned) on 18 hits and four walks, while striking out two.
The Wildcats will be in action again on Saturday, April 12 when they travel to Chicopee, MA to take on Elms College in an NECC twinbill at 2:00 p.m., while Bay Path travels to Weston, MA to take on Regis College on the same day at 1:00 p.m.
