Bay Path University Opens Day 1 Spring Break with 5-1 loss to Wilkes

Wilkes opened its season with a 5–1 win over Bay Path on Monday morning in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, riding a three-run first inning and a dominant complete game from pitcher L. DeMarco.

Wilkes (1–0) struck immediately with aggressive baserunning and timely contact. After getting runners on, the Colonels manufactured the game's first run when T. Piragas stole second and H. Cross stole home for a 1–0 lead. Moments later, A. Williams delivered the big swing of the inning with a single to center that produced two runs—Piragas scored and M. Butka came around to score as well—pushing the advantage to 3–0.

From there, DeMarco took control in the circle. The Wilkes right-hander went the distance, allowing just three hits and one earned run over seven innings while striking out nine and walking two. Bay Path (0–1) struggled to generate consistent offense, fanning nine times and leaving little margin for error.

Wilkes added to the lead in the fifth. With Piragas again involved in the rally, S. Petersen lined an RBI single to left to make it 4–0. Bay Path (0-1) answered in the bottom half when Ansley Morrison doubled and later scored on Madison Tessmer's RBI single to center, trimming the deficit to 4–1.

Any momentum was short-lived. Wilkes tacked on an insurance run in the seventh as Williams came through again with an RBI single, scoring Butka for the final 5–1 margin. Williams finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Wilkes piled up 11 hits overall. Butka went 2-for-4 and tripled, and Petersen added two hits and an RBI.

Bay Path pitcher Madison Sunderland worked all seven innings but took the loss after surrendering five runs on 11 hits.
